Household insurance important during cold snap Households in Northern Ireland have been reminded of the importance of cheap household insurance as the cold weather begins to take its toll.
With the Met Office having forecast more cold weather across Britain, many properties are suffering weather damage and burst pipes, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ spokesman for Northern Ireland Tom McClelland told the newspaper that homeowners “have been lulled into a false sense of security” when it comes to the likelihood of weather damage.
“This year winter has come back to bite us in the sense that we have had a decade of winters when there were no problems, so we got complacent,” he explained.
Homes which have suffered damage should have their central heating and electrics switched off by the property owner, while cold taps should be opened up to drain any remaining water from the system.
Earlier this month, the Scottish National Party recommended that cold weather and winter fuel payments be increased with no end of the cold weather in site.
