The U.S. Department of Labor is giving states new resources to help them detect, prevent and recover improper unemployment payments and fraud.
The Fraud Tips and Leads Gateway, a new online tool, provides the public with a portal to report fraud. It also will help states act quickly to aggressively investigate tips and leads as well as prosecute bad actors, according to federal officials.
The Labor Department also is publishing new, consumer-friendly materials highlighting the most common mistakes that claimants make and what businesses can do to avoid the negative tax implications of improper payments.

A Louisiana man, caught backing out of the driveway of a flaming house with a burned thumb and a bottle of gasoline on the floorboard of his BMW, was convicted of aggravated arson by a St. Tammany Parish jury.
The Times-Picayune reports Carl Anthony Duperon, 55, faces up to 20 years in prison.
Police had charged that in June 2011, Duperon set a small fire on the backside of a Slidell house. A woman inside escaped injury.
A passer-by called Slidell police to report the fire.
Officers said they arrived to find Duperon backing out of the homes driveway.
Duperon denied setting the fire. He was convicted this past week and sentencing is set for Feb.

National insurance company Allstate Corp. notified its insurance agents about errors in their tax documents that may affect agent commissions for the year until corrected.
The form 1099-MISC issued to agents that shows their income for the year reported incorrect income information related to two incentive programs for some agency owners. In some cases, it also processed some agency owners income information to the wrong agent identification numbers, according to The Wall Street Journal.
About 5,400 agent locations managed by 4,700 agency owners (out of about 11,000) were affected, the newspaper reported.
Allstate will issue a corrected Form 1099-MISC to those agents.
